Canon EOS 450D digital SLR
Canon has seen its lead in the consumer digital SLR market slipping away recently, and is now running to catch up in a crowded and highly competitive field. The EOS 450D, a 12.2-megapixel entry-level model featuring live view and easy-to-use picture customisation, is facing stiff competition from market rivals Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus. Can it claw back some of the lead, or is it too little and too late?

Canon EOS 450D Review
The Canon EOS 450D (also known as the Rebel Xsi) is the latest addition to Canon’s entry-level range of digital SLR cameras, which first debuted over 4 years ago with the original EOS 300D model. Times have rapidly changed since that landmark product, with a large number of competitive DSLR cameras from the likes of Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, and Samsung now available. Canon have hit back with the EOS 450D by taking its predecessor, the 400D, and adding a handful of standout new features, including Live View mode, an increase from 10 to 12 megapixels (which is more than the mid-range EOS 40D model), a larger 3 inch LCD screen, spot metering and SD cards instead of CompactFlash. A few features have also filtered down from the EOS 40D, most notably 14-bit processing for more accurate colour, and Canon are at last supplying an image stabilised kit lens with the 450D. So does the Canon EOS 450D still cut it in an increasingly cut-throat market, and is it the right DSLR camera for you?

Camera Labs – Canon EOS 450D review
The Canon EOS 450D is a powerful DSLR for the money and a worthy successor to the best-selling EOS 400D. Canon has sensibly followed Nikon’s winning strategy for the D80 and instead of aiming at the lowest price-point, has produced a more upmarket model. Beyond higher resolution, a bigger screen and Live View, you also get a larger viewfinder, faster continuous shooting, several processing features from the higher-end EOS 40D and even its PC remote control software. It all adds up to a highly compelling package, but the 450D faces strong competition not just from Sony’s Alpha A350, but also Canon’s DSLRs on either side of the range. At Camera Labs we’ve directly compared the 450D against its predecessor and key rivals, so to find out which model best suits your style of photography, check out our full review. And as always, see our video tour for a demo of the key features.
